HAADF-STEM image of a chromium aluminium nitride (Cr1-xAlxN) coating prepared by magnetron sputtering, where a multi-layered nanostructure formed by a stack of layers of different composition. Cr1-xAlxN coatings are excellent candidates for advanced machining and protection for high temperature applications. The tailored architecture and composition of the Cr1-xAlxN coating provides oxidation resistance in air up to 1000ºC. The wavy appearance of the columnar and multi-layered architecture resembles the sand-wave motion on the beach. Equipment: HAADF-STEM image obtained with a FEI Tecnai G2F30 S-Twin STEM microscope, operated at 300 kV, with 0.2 nm point resolution, and equipped with a HAADF Fischione detector with 0.16 nm point resolution.
